An outlet mall opened in 2008 near the eastern Hungarian city of Polgár is proving very popular with shoppers, including thousands from neighboring Ukraine, Romania and Slovakia, writes ingatlanhirek.hu.
The mall, which opened in 2008, had 600,000-700,000 customers last year, with around 25%-30% from outside of Hungary, and with business peaking during the holiday season.
According to the mall's top manager, Miklós Szebenyi, it had a harder time becoming successful than its biggest peer in Hungary, the Premier Outlet Center, on the outskirts of Budapest, largely because countryside customers are less mobile than those near the capital.
The mall hopes to have 50 shops in the near future, and is also expecting a number of "big hits" - meaning large standout retailers - though Szebenyi declined to identify these until firm contracts are signed.
