Tamas Suchman, head of the Balaton Development Council, told public radio MR1 on Thursday that he was resigning from coordinating the construction of a MotoGP motorcycle racetrack near the lake over accusations surrounding the project.
“I do not want to participate in such a project where every kind of accusation has been started, from blackmail to the uncertainty of recouping the investment,” Mr Suchman said. The next government can take a decision on the matter, he added.
The government decided in the autumn on HUF 20bn in state subsidies and a state guarantee for a loan of at most HUF 15.3bn from MFB for Savoly Motorcentrum Fejleszto, which is building the HUF 40bn racetrack, called Balatonring. But the contract has still not been signed amid reports Finance Ministry officials do not back the plan.

Hop on the Balaton area merry go round…First the FlyBalaton Airport, now the Moto GP race track..nothing changes in this part of the world.
The Magyar Tourism head quits over the racecourse, Mr. Suchman quits over the race course, and also is in quarel with the airport operators…Now we all ask why?? I am sure most of you reading and commenting on these subjects know why…I will wait for your comments first…Cmon boys and girls in the South Balaton area..we see again how tourism is not the focal point here..but individuals greed and manipulation..BKV, MAV, MALEV, ministers, officials,
lets not forget they all graduated with honours from their Communism era pre arranged schools and work places!!
@peter:
Yes, it’s a sad story – but I had misgivings about that “Balatonring” from the beginning, although I’m not an expert on these projects at all.
On the other hand we all probably agree that Fly Balaton is a commercially viable thing, just needs more of, yeah, everything …
Even though my connection to the UK is light, me and my family alone could account for a dozen passengers to the UK each year – and there so many people interested in this …
We just have to wait and see (said the blind guy) …
I have contact with many Brits that fly out to Balaton. They all miss the Flybalaton airport.
The sheer scale of corruption in Hungary is mind-boggling.
I have been trying to help some young Hungarians
insofar as paying them wages to do various odd jobs.
Gardening, clearing rubbish, some building work etc. Otherwise they would have no income whatsoever.
Very sad, indeed. Especially when you consider how much money is being appropriated from every known source by thieving embezzlers.
