MFB cancels Balatonring support

State development bank MFB has decided not to guarantee a Ft 15 billion loan to the developers of the Balatonring motorcycle race track, the bank announced on Friday.

The investor, Sávoly Motorcentrum Fejlesztő, could not meet the MFB’s requirements, the bank said, adding that the MFB and the Economy Ministry which supervises it have not seen proper suggestions on managing the risks associated with the project.

The government still supports the project in Sávoly near Lake Balaton but can do so only if the investor presents a different financing plan, the MFB said. In that case the state would be willing to pay the licence fees for the MotoGP event.

Fidesz has made it clear that it will review the whole project if it takes power, Napi Gazdaság notes.

The Finance Ministry expressed reservations about the project in October.

This is the real shame! Our nice nation and country simply do not deserve anything new and good because we f..k up everything we can! And by now the whole world got aware of this! In this country nothing works what works out elsewhere in the world! In Malaysia and in Russia they’re already completing their race track!

Hope that Hungary will not get the chance again to organize MotoGP as simular big event!

  2. Erik says:

I think I’ve asked this before but can’t remember if anyone answered: Is there any reason the Hungaroring wouldn’t also be suitable for MotoGP? Just seems nuts to build another whole track essentially for one weekend of use a year.

  3. david says:

@Erik. Because nobody would make any money out of it. As for using the Hungaroring, it is actually more suited to bike racing than cars. It nearly always produces yawning car races. Well suited for bikes.

Bikes, cars, spaceships, rockets, lunar modules,
and so on. Why race them? Why build tracks?

The benefits of the Moto GP…well we work in the tourism sector in this part of Hungary and I can list a few. Yes 1 race a year for the Pro circuit,
100-150 thousand visitors for a week, the course would host many national and European races, a motorcycle driving skill school was to open all year round, also the largest % of fans in Europe come from Italy,Spain, and its 200km closer to Savoly from these countries than Budapest where the Hungaroring is a car race circuit..Try playing basktball on a ice hockey rink, similar to motorcycle racing on a car circuit..etc..etc..I can tell you why the race was cancelled..a few politicians who bought up land in the area and saw prices shoot up 500%..torpedoed the deal last week..their sorry little asses got scared of being thrown in jail further down the road as is happening to their Budapest political friends now!! Extortion, corruption, money laundering, black mail, threats..welcome to invest in Hungary class !!!

Right now in Huungary there are too many projects “on hold” or aborted:

Near Heviz we have the unfinished golf course between Zalacsány and Kehida, we have that beautiful wooden tower that is slowly rotting and a lot of empty and/or unfinished buildings.

The reasons for these problems may be different – but it’s still a shame …

  7. peter c. says:

@wolfi…on the bright side a brand new golf course opens april 1 at the szep kilato in balatongyorok.
http://www.imperial-balaton.com!!!probably the most beautiful piece of real estate at lake balaton.

  8. JackBlack says:

pete. What about the RoyalBalaton Golf club at Balatonudvari?.This opened two years ago. It has a beautiful panoramic view of the Lake and is international standard.
Wolfi. Thanks for info. There are so many taxes in this country it’s hard to keep up! Said the actress to the bishop!

  9. peter c. says:

@jackblack..for sure udvari is great. With another course now at gyorok at least hotel packages for golf can offer these 2 courses to clients along with european lakes in hencse and birdland in bukfurdo…

    @peter:

Surely you know this old joke:

Do you play golf or still have sex ?

Have to disappoint you, I don’t play golf, but still thanks!

PS: My English brother-in-law (who lives near Gatwick) plays golf, so if Fly Balaton offers flights again from London …

My sister visited me already and would like to come again to the Balaton with all her family …

  11. JackBlack says:

Yes,Peter, a good package deal for would.be tourists.
Problem is the businesses here are a tad behind in the marketing and advertising department.
Siofok has suffered in recent years but it has depended too much on German tourists that have become scarcer and scarcer.
Many Brits enjoyed Balaton and have bought property out here. Trouble is with the cancellation of flights from Sarmallék/Flybalaton has put a dampner on things.
Still, Lake Balaton is a great tourist spot and I enjoy it very much. A week long guitar festival in June as well..what more could you ask for?

We’re also waiting with baited breath for something to develop around balaton, particularly something which would make it easier for us to get there from Manchester. There’s a whole gang of us now who holiday there every single year and as our kids are now teenagers, they take their friends from home with them, who all absolutely love it and can’t wait to return – next one arranged for July. Sarmellek was great while it lasted (apart from the Ryanair experience)- but only once we got there because we didn’t have that arduously long journey (and cost) from Budapest. Getting to Stansted from Manchester was arduous itself and the timings were so bad that the whole journey overlapped 2 days, so we’ve settled for travelling with Jet2 from Manchester and we have a very reliable taxidriver who picks us up and deposits us at Fonyod for £100. Great if there are a few of you to share the cost. So yes, Hungary is a fab little country and Lake Balaton is a dream of a place, so come on Hungary, we’re really tooting for you to invest in developments that are screaming out for visitors.

  13. Wings says:

silkyhen. The SCD/Quinlan group have invested heavily in Lake Balaton. A company representing them administrate the FlyBalaton Airport. It is up and running again with flights from Germany already landing there.
I presume it is all down to persuading an airline to fly from a UK airport to Flybalaton at Sarmellék?
It would benefit the investors, tourists, local businesses, and the economy, if this could be achieved?

  14. wolfi says:

over Easter we went to San Francisco – of course we would have preferred to start “just across the road” from Sármellék, but I had to drive to Vienna and leave my car there, it was the only option we had …

So everybody’s hoping that some company will start flights to the UK sometime, sigh …
