Following calls to skip this year's August 20th fireworks display in favor of giving the money to flood victims in northeast Hungary, the government decided to instead have a subdued fireworks program, with the money saved being turned to flood relief. Now, nol.hu is reporting that the government has thanked a fireworks company from Szombathely for agreeing to throw the festivities for free, the only problem being that the company in question doesn't remember agreeing to it.
Kopula '96 Kft, the firework company that has been thanked for agreeing to throw the fireworks display, says that they certainly offered to throw it for free, but they don't recall ever actually agreeing to it. Over the years, the public relations for the fireworks display has always been farmed out to a third party, and this year is no different.
When the newspaper contacted Avantgarde, the PR company involved, they said that negotiations had taken place with Kopula '96, and that they were close to an agreement. Mihály Farkas, Kopula '96's owner, however, says that is not the case, as they have yet to sit down to discuss the details.
With neither side entirely sure what is going on, don't be surprised if like the fireworks themselves, all of these plans ultimately flame out.
