Sziget festival “city” ready to welcome visitors

Construction work is near completion at the location for the Sziget festival on Obuda island; one of Europe’s biggest festivals is due to officially open Wednesday next week, the business daily Vilagazdasag reported on Friday.

Construction work took 15 days, with HUF 500m spent on technical equipment alone, the second biggest item in the festival’s budget of around HUF 2.7bn, the paper said.

The biggest item – almost HUF 1.5bn – has been spent on programmes, including HUF 990m on the star performers’ pay and HUF 460m on other programmes.

This year, HUF 100m has been spent on advertising the festival in Hungary and HUF 135m abroad.

Ticket sales account for more than 70pc of the festival’s revenues. Despite promising initial sales figures, the number of festival passes shows a 5-10pc decline, while sales of day tickets are looking better than last year. The festival had 390,000 visitors last year, the paper said.
