Planned Budapest “museum quarter” could be completed by 2017, official says

A planned museum quarter that could reposition Budapest on the cultural map of Europe may be completed by late 2017, Museum of Fine Arts director László Baán declared on Thursday.

Baán justified the investment project destined on 56-osok tere by saying “this will create a completely new position for Budapest and the country’s image, and will place Budapest among the continent’s ten most important cities”.

Baán said he will submit a detailed proposal to the cabinet by next summer and the Ft 20-30 billion project could begin in 2014.

Baán is to merge the collection of the National Gallery with that of the Museum of Fine Arts by February 29, according to a government resolution published on October 20.

However, National Gallery director Ferenc Csák considers the merger hasty, professionally ill-considered and harmful for both institutions, Népszabadság writes. He has expressed his objections to National Resources Minister Miklós Réthelyi.
