Gov’t in bid to salvage ailing Kapuvár meat factory

The government has declared Kapuvári Hús and Kapuvári Bacon to be companies of strategic interest, after reports emerged that production has come to a halt at the meat processor, threatening jobs of some 400 people.

After weeks of reduced output, production has come nearly to a standstill and workers sent home, regional daily Kisalföld reported. The company’s AGM has been delayed until September 27.

The Union of Meat Industry Workers has called for government action to help the ailing meat industry and save some 800 jobs at Gyula and Kapuvár. The government has recently declared Gyulai Húskombinát a company of strategic interest.

Employees in Kapuvár will hold a demonstration at company headquarters on Friday.
